Case Studies
Working with our Palmetto Landfill, Waste Management helps power BMW's manufacturing plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
What makes this project unique is that, in most instances, naturally occurring landfill gas or methane is collected, converted into energy at our landfill and then distributed. In this case, a 9.5-mile pipeline was built to send the landfill gas directly to the plant where it is used to run generators. It's also the only landfill-gas-to-energy project that co-generates electricity and hot water for use at an industrial location remote from the landfill.
As a result of this partnership, the energy created is equivalent to the amount of energy necessary to heat 15,000 homes a year.
